I have not mentioned this to anyone reading my blog so I thought I'd let you in a little background about me...In 2007 I moved to Maryland to work as a Graphic Designer for a Government Contractor. While with the company for three years I secretly pined away at my paper goods and stationery, knowing that designing and creating stationery is what I really wanted to do.

In 2009, my husband and I relocated, and I've been looking for a "corporate-ish" gig since. These have been by far the toughest times to obtain employment. So while I am still looking for a a "corporate-ish" gig, I have been working on notepourri, and my website, notepourri.com now has a new look! Getting to Know OlivaMoon

While browsing the many wonderful works of art on Etsy, I came across OlivaMoon. Anne the creator of OlivaMoon is a delightful sculpture artist whose work is whimsical, delicate and detailed. I really wanted to interview her because her work hit a nostaligic chord with me. I immeditately was taken back to a time where life as a child was simple and Mother Goose and Fairytales filled my imagination with wonderful images of whimsy and wonder. Anne's responses really inspired me, and I hope you find inspiration in words, work and workspace.

At what age did you start creating and why? I have been creating for as long as I can remember. My father painted and could make anything, and my mother was a wonderful seamstress. I learned a lot from both of them and there were always paper and art supplies around. Some of my happiest early memories are of watching my father paint (the smell of turpentine still takes me back!) and going to fabric stores with my mother.

Who is OlivaMoon, how did OlivaMoon come to fruition? Oliva is my last name and the moon….well; it’s always been about the moon, hasn’t it? I think it’s romance of the stories we’re told when we’re young, “The Man in the Moon”, ect, and the sheer beauty of the moon that makes it so appealing.

Who have been your biggest supporters? I have been blessed to have always had a great deal of support from family and friends. So many people have believed in me, from my parents and brothers, to now my son and friends, some of whom go to shows and help me with everything from set-up to sales. So much support; I am truly blessed.

What has been your biggest accomplishment as an artist thus far?
The accomplishment I’m most proud of is that I’ve been able to encourage and teach young and beginning artists. What a wonderful feeling to hear from someone that they have grown in their art and that I was an influenced in that growth. Wow!

What is the most important part of the creative process for you? This is a difficult question; I love the entire creative process, even the part in the middle when the piece seems completely hopeless. But, I think the most important part is the original sketch. I carry a sketchbook so that I can get ideas down when inspiration strikes. It’s full of rough sketches and jotted notes. I go to my sketchbooks when I’m not sure what to work on next.

Has your art helped you in any areas of your life? Art helps me in all areas of my life. It keeps me sane. Creating art so often involves solving a series of problems. Learning problem solving and being able to think creatively is helpful when facing any of life’s problems. This is why it’s so important to keep art programs in schools.

What was your best flea market find? Ohhh, that’s so hard! You ask good questions! I have so many treasures from flea markets! But I think my favorite is the one that got away. It was a vintage Barnum & Baily circus poster that I passed up at a flea market many years ago. I grieved over it for many years until a couple of years ago when I met a young woman at a workshop in St Petersburg. She asked about Creative Paperclay, I encouraged her to try it and told her to contact me if I could help her. A few months later she contacted me, but not for tips, she wanted to commission a wedding-cake topper. I’d never done one, but was intrigued so we exchanged emails for awhile. She’d changed jobs and was working as a costume designer at Ringling Brothers in Sarasota. I told her that I love the vintage circus look and she said that her workroom was ringed with vintage circus posters. I, of course, told her about the one I was still grieving over. Months passed then she and her fiancé came to see me at a show I was doing in St Pete, and they brought me the poster! She had been able to procure one at work! I was completely floored, she had asked me to describe it to her, but I thought it was jus t out of curiosity! It’s hanging in my dining room now and it’s one of my favorite pieces.

Which creation is your favorite piece and why? Blue Moon is my favorite. I sketched it after a discussion on the definition of a blue moon. I thought, “No, it would just be a very sad moon.” The drawing was in my sketchbook for a couple of years before I started working on it. The problems it presented were complex and fun to solve. I was happy with him when I finished, that’s not always the case, but he is just so sad. His clothes are all shades of blue, except for his red bowtie. It’s out of character for him, but he wears it anyway because it was a gift from the sun.

If you can teach a young artist one thing, what would it be?I tell young artists to draw. Draw all the time. It doesn’t matter what the subject is, draw anything, but draw. Drawing taught me to see, and drawing skills are helpful no matter what type of art we end up doing.

My Grandmother's Green Thumb

This Monday there was a package at the door. I opened the door brought it inside and heard some rolling around. The box was a bit crushed. Not knowing what was in the package I opened it immediately to make sure that the contents were not damaged.

To my surprise seven delicious avocados were in the box! My grandmother sent them from Puerto Rico to New York. They are from her garden, she knocked them down from her avocado tree and ran to the post office so they would be arrive before ripening.

My mother's mom has an amazing green thumb which unfortunately was not passed down to me. I can't grow or keep a plant alive for more than a couple of months. Her property in Puerto Rico is like a botanical garden, orchids, exotic tropical plants, and edible goodies can all be found there. It amazes me what talents people have. I just wanted to share the photo with all of you!

I was browsing shops the other day whose main focus is handmade goods and came across Blush Envy, located in Naples, Florida. Upon finding this shop and looking at all of the stunning product photos, a few words came to mind - Gorgeous, delicate, whimsical and absolutely exquisite. A quick snippet from her profile reveals the following "So I'm eclectic just like my mother. That really does sum it up just about right. Do you know what you are selling? Do you know your customers? Part 1

I first dipped into the entrepreneurial world when I was in college. I needed some extra money and I started to make greeting cards. I was able to sell them for $7-$10 each, people really loved the fact that they were handmade. There was really something to the personalized experience the buyer and seller experience. I was studying graphic design so it was also a great way to put design principles to practice using a different medium than digital graphics. I can now say that I absolutely love paper, all kinds of paper.

Eventually notepourri was created in 2006. I've asked myself many questions about my products, my customers, competition etc. It's quite normal for me to spend about an hour a week seeing what competition is doing, what customers are saying, pricing etc. If you do not do this, it's highly recommended it helps you see where you can excel.

I love small businesses that are in the handmade market, some people do it to make a few extra bucks for a rainy day, some people do it because they want and need to make a living from their craft, any reason you create is a good enough reason.

So I ask you all.. Do you know what you are selling? Do you know your customers?

Some great questions to ask yourself are:

1. What does your product do?

2. Does your product fulfill a need?

3. Who is your product intended for?

3. Are your customers satisfied? How are competitors customer's satisfied?

4. What is your product?

5. What are the advantages or special features your product offers? (If you sell a specialty item, let your customers know what makes it special, and different than the rest).

6. Is your kind of product selling well? (Do you see someone selling a similar item and having a lot more success?,don't fret, taking the necessary steps to redefine your products so customers know why they should choose you is important and not difficult). Some things to ask yourself are:

Are your product photos clear, do they depict accurate color and size?
Are your product descriptions concise and informative?
Are you prices competitive? Competitive is not to say that you have to under price your items.
Do you have clear policies that might answer any questions a customer might have before making a purchase?
Do you offer customers occasional promotions? Are return customers acknowledged?
Do you try to engage in business to business transactions and not just customer level transactions? Partnerships
can be beneficial.
Is your packaging memorable? There are plenty of inexpensive ways to package items.
Do you include a few business cards?
Do you state where your customers can find you?
What makes your product better than products with similar quality and concept?
Do you offer any guarantees?
Do you offer bulk discounts?
How is the product distributed? (Are you printing in your home? or in an outside studio using a knitting machine?, this is important information, you need to be honest about how your item is created).
How flexible are you with customization on products? Are you charging for extra options?
What days do you ship your products?
What happens if a shipping error takes place, will you send a new package? offer a refund?
Do you sell internationally? It is great to research shipping costs so you are not left paying out of pocket for
shipping items that cost a lot more than you anticipated when sending to a certain country.
Are you social networking?
Do you have a blog, or personal website?
Do you carry around some of your product samples?
Do you have friends, family and colleagues mention what you do to others?

6. Are you using a specific formula for pricing your items?

7. Do you have a bio? Do you let your customers know a little about the person behind the business? Perhaps a professional looking head shot, creative head shot, it adds some flair. Stating all of the venues you sell on, a contact e-mail or phone number? I have come across many people who are not comfortable talking on the phone with customers but it is very beneficial for you and can lead to more sales because you create a comfortable environment for your customer.

I will periodically ask myself all of those questions because I think self-assessments can lead to amazing ideas or practices. I hope you find my post beneficial :)

It's important to say I love you to those close to you. Sometimes we forget, or feel obligated. During Valentine's Day many people like to give something that screams "I love you.", "I appreciate you.", but sometimes you might not want to write a novel, or be overly mushy, or want some cheesy romantic prose..... Hearts for Haiti - Support the Cause

My deepest condolences to all of those affected in some way by the tragedy in Haiti. In times like this is when people set aside their differences and band together to support one common goal in an effort to help restore what has been lost; to rebuild. I came across a press release about an etsy shop that was created to donate proceeds of items sold to Haiti relief.

Valentine's Day <3

I am still recovering from the Christmas and New Year season. Valentine's day has a way of creeping up on me, I don't really celebrate it; it's a day to say I love you, I appreciate you etc.; which I do mostly everyday. I will not lie to all of you though... I am a hopeless romantic, I adore watching a good love story or reading about one. I met my husband on Match.com 7 years ago, we married in September '09, this always makes for a good story. By the way... I was 19 when I decided to hop onto match.com (It's the old woman in me, I was already tired of the bar and dating scene, so had to switch it up). The internet clearly has its pros.

One thing I love to do is window shop all of the beautiful Valentine's day themed handmade items by so many wonderfully talented people. Frilly, 'girly', red, pink, white handmade items make me swoon in delight. No I have not lost my mind, Valentine's day is weeks away, but I wanted all of you to get a good start on picking up a card or two or three, or a cute little gift for the one(s) you love. I specialize in paper goods, so it's natural that I am attracted to them. I came across this "Do the Math Card" ,and if you're not great with numbers, like me, then this card is perfect! Monkey Mind Design is fairly new to etsy, and paper goods do well there. I love when artists decide to persue their passion as a way to generate income. I will be keeping an eye on this shop and I hope you visit and hopefully find something that makes your heart flutter :)

The name behind these creations is Jayne Leigh Blume. She is currently the featured seller on etsy.com, which I think is quite deserving. Animals deserve stylish comfort too. You can read her interview here.

For those that are fans of cats, know someone with a cat or if you own a cat these modern cat beds are super fashionable. The beds also get extra style points because vintage fabrics are used. Martha Stewart’s Encyclopedia of Craft = Awesomeness

So for Christmas 2009, my husband gave me a copy of the below:

I’ve been wanting this book for a while now. On a shopping trip a week before Christmas, I picked it up to purchase it but decided not to get it just yet (good thing, because it was so exciting to see it in a Christmas gift bag!). I had to sit down and read this in it’s entirety at 1 am a few days after the holidays, and from cover to cover I was not disappointed. There are beautiful photographs showing each craft and step-by-step directions to complete my very own beauties. The diversity of the crafts shown in the book really cater to those in all facets of the artistic industry. As a graphic designer I am always looking to different projects to spark ideas and this book really fulfilled my appetite for creative inspiration. I highly recommend it to anyone who likes to craft as a hobby or profession.

Monday Mother's Day Series I of 5

A few days ago I was thinking of how I need to prepare a few more gifts for mother's day, my fiance's sister recently had a baby as well as his cousin and my sister has a little one too. Sometimes I like to splurge a little extra, but in times of an economic pinch we might have to cut back. However, cutting back doesn't mean you can't get an absolutely, personalized, beautiful gift. There are five Mondays left until the weekend before Mother's Day. This series will feature beautiful but inexpensive gift ideas mothers will absolutely treasure.

When I purchase a gift there are a few things I look for.

Is the gift unique?
Is it a good value?
Does it compliment the person's personality and style

Depending on the person, whether a friend or relative I might look at a few other areas but the three I wrote here are a general starting point. One of the best parts about this series will be how all of the finds are $25 or less!

I was browsing etsy this morning looking for wallpaper for my office (preferably vinyl so I can remove it without a hitch). To my absolute delight I stumbled upon this exquisite little shop, When in Doubt Draw Flowers, and found absolutely delicious hand painted wallpaper. Seriously - it cannot get any better than that, especially when the patterns are so sophisticated and fresh.

I love the name of this shoppe. Since young I would always doodle flowers which became more artistic and developed as my art blossomed. Her use of color is wonderful - there is something so bold yet subtle about all of the products found in her shoppe. You can purchase lunch bags, buttons, earrings, bags and clutches with fabulous patterns! I would be too scared to wallpaper anything in this precious paper, I would find a wonderful frame for it, this hand painted paper is truly a work of art!

Valentine's Day reminds me of childhood and candy, but I am now in fitness mode, after all have to make sure I am fit and trim for my wedding gown (there is a point to why I mention this further down - us artists are so easily distracted by pretty things.)

Tomorrow is the infamous day where lovers unite (or not) to celebrate their love for one another, and while it sounds quite cheesy and overrated for some, it's quite sweet. One of the things I am grateful for is not having to be in elementary school or junior high on this day, thank goodness those days are over, I wouldn't go back if someone paid me to. However, if I received these earrings from my secret valentine I would have been wooed very easily. I was a hard to get kinda girl... I kid... I was actually a wallflower and quite shy.

These sweets are made from two 15mm sterling silver bezel cups filled with gobs of multi colored candy sprinkles. They are then sealed and cured in a clear, water resistant gloss. Both bezels are hung from 0.925 sterling silver earwires for the finale. These earring will allow you to be sweet all year round, I recommend picking these K A T I E earrings up for your spring/summer wardrobe, you are bound to get comments on these curious earrings. These would also make an awesome birthday gift. These can absolutely be enjoyed guilt free, I knew there was a loophole to being on this treacherous diet. So on this valentine's day, I will be picking up a carrot and not a lovely dark chocolate truffle or red velvet cupcake... mmmmmmmmm. As a Grad student, bride-to-be, 9-5 graphic designer, and owner of notepourri things can become quite hectic. When things become to busy in our lives it is quite easy to put things on the back burner. My company, notepourri has been doing quite well, with over 35 sales this month; notepourri must step up its branding game. I have several ideas to branch out in this area (sorry, I can't divulge them, you never know when competitors are watching or reading).

I have developed a checklist of sorts (my lists span multiple sketchbooks, and in no particular order I tackle them). Okay, okay, I admit... it seems a bit unorganized, I agree. So with that said, I will tackle goal # 1: Create a readable, organized checklist, using one piece of paper. To make this list I will make it interactive by listing it here so you can follow along and maybe be inspired to create your own. Like I mentioned before, I can't divulge everything but I will keep it general enough to provoke some thoughts on how you can create some brand presence.

So I have Goal #1 down. Here is my list.

1. Design & Print business cards (don't ask why I specialize in paper goods and have no business cards, it is beyond explanation).

2. Work out the kinks on a prototype for packaging design. I had to dig deep outside of the box for this one. So here are some points to think about when designing your packaging.

Do you want your packaging to be eco-friendly?
How expensive are you willing to go? Set your budget from the beginning, the more complex the folds and design the more expensive.
Do you need a die cut to produce the packaging?
Look at those in your industry. Is their packaging something that makes you say wow? If so, you need to take it up a level.
Look outside of your industry as well. The greatest ideas can come from looking how other industries go about their branding. Leave your comfort zone.
Is your packaging inexpensive enough that it will fit into your small business budget? Look at order minimums for printing etc. Sometimes it's better to go bulk, when you see the cost per unit.
Color printing is more expensive - look at black and white options and perhaps jazz it up with colored tissue paper, ribbon, gift tag etc...

3. Design and print labels for packaging.

4. Make the most of online networking tools. Join more and be more involved.

As of right now I am advertising on about 4 high-traffic blogs (not enough).
I belong to twitter which has resulted in some great exposure
I am on facebook, myspace and migente
I also upload my products to various websites like kaboodle, thisnext etc.
Also, this is most important... I have been trying to make it a priority to post on my blog.

So, that seems like a lot but I think it can be completed in a reasonable time frame of 2 weeks. So the first part of my list deals with a lot of how my products will be presented. I need to stand out; I need to be a front runner. I will post the rest of my list tomorrow, so please check back! I hope you have become inspired to create a list of your own.

The next part of my list will deal with the product line I carry and making some decisions on what to keep and what to chuck. A cohesive and consistent brand sends a strong message. Diluted brands can create chaos, you want to convey a calm experience for your customers, let's focus in on what will make your brand stronger. Let's give your customers what they want.

Branding Uh-OH... PepsiCo Has Some Explaning To Do

Oh Tropicana... You have abandoned me. I was watching American Idol tonight and during commercials there was a new Tropicana Orange Juice Commercial. Had I not been watching and listening to the whole commercial; I would have never known it was Tropicana Orange Juice. Why? Because the packaging for the orange juice has gone from classic and memorable to sterile and hollow.

If you are currently not aware of this, Tropicana is a brand of PepsiCo. There are several points I would like to make here. I will tell anyone entering the world of entrepreneurship that it is okay to mold and shape your brand throughout time, especially if you are finding your niche, targets and all the wonderful things that start to mean you're an established business, looking to make an impact and be memorable in and beyond your industry. Not every company out there creates a look for their brand and in one shot it's a hit, a smash. Rebranding happens, it's part of a brand's lifespan. But please, proceed with caution.

I will say that consistency is key. PepsiCo. is no exception, they have been consistent, but not in the best way possible. They have had approx 30 slogans throughout their history and not all have been good (some have been quite mediocre).

Pepsi... why have you forsaken your consumer for a design that speaks no frills? A design that says "I am just like everyone else."Tropicana now blends into the supermarket shelves like a 15 year old wallflower at a party. No good. As a consumer I would like to know that the money I spent on Tropicana was going to an effective rebranding campaign. You have changed a brand I came to know and love by simply stripping it of its very recognizable identity. You have taken our comfort and consistency away. While my fiance was at my parent's house over Christmas he couldn't find the OJ - why? because it didn't look like the brand he came to know over 20+ years!

I think it's time to shop for a new brand. I will be brave on this quest, but sorry Pepsico... There are some things that should be left as is. Especially when all of your other Tropicana drinks (Orange Strawberry etc.) have not been redesigned. Again, why are you being so inconsistent?
I must forecast that the new design for Tropicana OJ and Pepsi will not last, these are not timeless designs. Pespsico, if you are listening to little notepourri's blog the person(s) that gave the nod for this catastrophe, please, do all of your loyal consumers one favor... just one... FIRE Them!

There is of course a sliver lining to all of this. I now have a topic for a case study in branding when grad classes start up again in a few weeks.

Branding your business Series - RULE #1 What the heck is my name?

Long ago (well in 2006) I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Graphic Design - I am now a Grad student working on my Marketing Management / MBA, a dual degree. While I love and live for artistic design, business and marketing is an excellent segue into a second, more psychologically, statistically, consumer behavior influenced art form.

I recently started notepourri™, a line of paper goods for your everyday life and business because I love practical and functional items that are aesthetically pleasing. Another reason I have decided to venture into the world of paper goods is because it's an extremely competitive arena and really causes one to step their game up. As an artist it is extremely easy for me to design things"I" love (keyword "I"), but in this profession I have to design things that not only I love but are appealing enough to others that they purchase them.

Recently, I was looking at some handmade shoppes and businesses, a constant theme that flows throughout my browsing of shoppes is B-R-A-N-D-I-N-G. What is the driving force behind business that choose not to create a brand for their company or name? I come across a lot of shoppes with names that are found elsewhere, already in use.

So RULE #1 for my branding series is to ask yourself.
"What the heck is in my name?"

One night my significant other and I (who is now my fiance) were discussing what my shoppe name should me. I needed something that rolled off of the tongue, something simple, memorable - the fiance came up with notepourri™. It was love at first mention!

So I need you to ask yourself a few questions, this can be a little homework assignment.

1. What does my name mean?

2. Does my name have a meaning only I will understand? If so how can I relate it to my service or product?

3. Is my name being utilized by someone else? Can I trademark it?

4. Can I expand my products under the name I am choosing, or is the name limiting my abaility to eventually expand outside of my original product/service scope?

5. Can I create a memorable logo/visuals using my name? Think of some ideas to create a visual identity for your brand.

6. After I answer all of the above, do I LOVE it? Sleep on your name, don't think of something overnight and automatically register an account somewhere and start selling products under that name. Sometimes an idea seems wonderful and after we sit on it, we regret the choice.

7. If you answer all of the above and you LOVE your name, the next step is to Trademark your name (which costs $325).

New Venue for Selling You Handmade Goods $7 for LIFE!

I've been selling on etsy since the end of July and have been searching to expand my selling venues. I am awaiting the opening of Lollishops, I am quite excited about it, there are a lot of people waiting for the site to open.

While browsing the etsy forums I came across a post discussing a new site for selling handmade goods, Art Fire.

The site was too irresistible not to sign up!
For less than what I am spending on etsy per month in etsy listing fees and commissions I can list unlimited items for only $7 a month and there is no commission taken!

Jewlery why must you tease me so!

I like shiny, dull, rusty, imperfect, new, vintage, colorful, muted, gold, silver, copper, whimsical, elegant jewelry (is that too much?). When I browse etsy I 'ooh and ahhh' over the absolutely amazing handmade and vintage jewelry I come across. The feeling I get looking at so many gorgeous items takes me back to a time when I was around four or five years old... My mom took me shopping and guess what? I came across every little girl's dream, an aisle chock full of Hello Kitty to last me a lifetime! I decided to tell my mom that I wanted absolutely every single item in the aisle and when she uttered the dreaded word "no" I proceeded to throw a tantrum while lying on the aisle floor. Let's just say I never threw another tantrum nor did I accompany my mom on shopping trips until I was little more mature.

So while I don't throw a tantrum because I cannot have every single piece of jewelry I come across on etsy, I do let out a little sigh.... A girl can dream can't she?

I came across That Jewelry Girl on etsy and I absolutely love the colors, findings and combinations found throughout the various pieces. I think of the secret garden or going through my grandmother's jewelry box and finding that one piece that holds magic and history.

Jewelry with character is wonderful, people notice it and best of all when it is handmade you are probably the only one in the world with that piece (which always makes is extra special).

As a business owner, full-time grad student and full-time graphic designer networking is one of the most valuable tools we have, everywhere you go there is an opportunity to tell someone what you do.

Cutest Pin Cushions, Oh My!

The pin cushions at Sugar Elf's Shop crush the cuteness barometer. The product photos are excellent and really allow you to appreciate just how cute they are! I am imagining that they are just too adorable in person.

On the days where I find time to sit down and window shop on etsy (can't spend money as I am saving up for my wedding in 2009) I come across things I need (actually more like must have!). If I could spend some money this pincushion would be in my cart and I'd be clicking through paypal as I type. But alas, I must wait till after my wedding to snatch one of these pretties up.
